I dont believe its a myth that site could be penalized for buying backlinks. As matter a fact google is doing that for a while now. Sure there is nothing wrong with advertising on other sites, but one needs to be a bit cautious where to place backlink these days. Getting to many backlinks at once probably will raise a red flag. How much is to many depends on previous backlink count.
