After five years of college , and a few hard years of working, I found myself in the field of media production, earning a living making use of the most recent technology to produce content for my clients.

When in college I went through a few years working with tape-to-tape editing systems.  Video production then took a lot of time and was difficult .  In my last year of college, technology changed – and  changed quickly .  By the year’s end training was being done on ‘non-linear’ video editors , a radical and exciting shift in concept when it came to editing video .  Only two years later when I went to grad school , the linear tape-to-tape video editing systems were gone and were replaced with the latest and greatest in video editing .

Thus began a process that seemed like it had no end .   The technology changes and advancements  are so wide-ranging and so rapid that even we professionals in the world of media have a stressful  time learning about all  the new technology . Even once we’ve narrowed in on a platform and software choice, the updates  to the software  are enough to keep us continually learning .

For busy small business owners , this can be an incredibly difficult and frustrating endeavor. It seems like we are in a “catch 22″.    If we put in the time , money and training required  to become a master of a particular field, we have  to spend less time in  other areas where growth is as constant and unrelenting.  Eventually we get left behind and before long we cannot  give  our clients the high quality  that they rightfully demand.  Option two however is just  as problematic .   By spacing  our time out we risk becoming a jack of all trades, but master of none.

My work for my clients requires precision . They come to me when they need business video production  that is on the cutting edge in every area.  The clients want our content to keep up with the trends of a media-savvy world. The latest trends in Hollywood and on the major networks very quickly become the trends our clients want  to see coming out of small production houses all over America where a single person is doing the work  of twenty at the big companies .  If I want to keep attracting the top end clients, I have to be an expert  in graphic design, in HD Video Acquisition, in the creative  editing of their content, and in the delivery of their finished work.

It’s a nearly impossible task to complete, not to mention a very costly  process to keep up with purchasing all the latest in technology.  Not long ago I could plan for expenses in hardware and software upgrades once a year or every two years. These days if I waited two years I would be starting from ground zero .  No sooner have I purchased the quickest , most impressive computer for  video editing  than the giants in media content creation develop  the newest  in video acquisition, which requires a newer, faster computer to manage  it. It’s a never ending , unrelenting, and completely maddening circle of change that never stops .

So under the clouds of such depressing conditions , what is the best case solution ?  The answer is not a solution by any means.  It’s a matter of making a decision , and then figuring out how  to make that choice work.  In my situation  I felt the decision  was – stay up to date  or go out of business .  The process  of course would be a little harder .

For years I was nearly a one-man show. Most of the work  I did I could finish  almost entirely by myself . The projects  may have taken more time , but from start to finish  I was completely  responsible for the final project . When it became clear that would not work anymore  I made some difficult  decisions .  Keeping in mind  it would deeply affect my income for a time, I made the decision  to begin hiring experts  to handle different areas of content creation.  I no longer had the time to spend creating original content in graphic design – so I hired an expert who was better than me in the first place .  It was more costly , but I also began creating  better graphic design content than in the past .  I began renting the high quality  equipment on video shoots instead of just using the paid off equipment I’d had for years.  It was more  costly , but in no time  I was delivering products to my clients produced  with the highest quality technology available (reasonably speaking ).   My business change  basically came down to Hiring UP.  Anything I didn’t do, I hired someone more qualified  than me to do it.  There were times I had to swallow my pride to do it, but I reminded myself that I was in reality  becoming a producer – and that the final work  ultimately reflected back on me – and so a high quality  product would only make the company look better.

Did it work?  It did.  It’s still an expensive process – more than I’d like to admit, but that process is also bringing in larger  clients with deeper pockets.  I’m dedicating myself to constant and consistent training in all areas of production. I never want to let technology surpass me to the point where I cannot  maintain a creative control or lack the knowledge to understand my creative options.  But I know now that I cannot  manage all areas of video production  with the know how  that my clients need .  The growth is simply too fast.  If my Phoenix wedding videography  company doesn’t grow equally with these advances , I risk losing my business , selling typewriters in an age of laptops.
