I dont believe its a myth that site could be penalized for buying backlinks. As matter a fact google is doing that for a while now. Sure there is nothing wrong with advertising on other sites, but one needs to be a bit cautious where to place backlink these days. Getting to many backlinks at once probably will raise a red flag. How much is to many depends on previous backlink count.

Thank you for your article. It was very insightful in informing me about the pros and cons on commenting on blogs. I have been readin in other blogs about the “nofollow” but didn’t quite understand how it worked in its totality. A lot of the sites that I visited and read seemed to experienced spamming. It is very discouraging to find people and companies taking advantage of this.
Real blog commenting is definitely a great tool to use and very time consuming too. Recently, I found a great resource that introduced me to different ways to increase traffic to my site by not only using web commenting. The pragmatic results were quite interesting. I agree with you, however, that online marketing strategies do not make any sense.
