The interview centers around DecorMyEyes.com, a New York-based online eyewear marketer, and its CEO, Vitaly Borker, a one-man spewer of intimidation, threats, verbal abuse and anything else that Borker can use against people who request refunds from  his company.

Why does he do this? Borker says he behaves like a jerk primarily because it improves his rankings on Google.

So what’s happening here? According to Borker, it’s a given that people who are dissatisfied with a company are more likely to write a review on a consumer review site than someone who was happy with the product or service. Borker – who has never pretended to be nice to people who tried to return items – noticed that whenever his complaint quotient rose, rankings for his search terms moved higher and higher up page one.  He often outranked the home pages for the designer eyeglass companies that he sells through his site.

In other words, it didn’t matter what was being said about his company, but how many times the company was mentioned on other sites. These mentions fed rankings back to his site. As a result, DecorMyEyes.com does great business in spite of admittedly horrible customer service.

The stickler to this situation is what is particularly bothersome to RM experts.  Borker noticed that when he once hired a reputation management company to push down some of the bad comments off of page one, he lost his number one spot for DecorMyEyes on Google.  As soon as he went back to nasty, he was back on top.

Borker presumed that all of those complaint sites – which required the complainer to type in the URL for the offending site – were providing link juice back to his site, which boosted his rankings, which led to more customers.

You may be asking, doesn’t Google have a way to keep  Borker and other like him from getting away with this? That’s what Danny Sullivan wondered that too in his commentary on the Times article at SearchEngineLand.com. Sullivan, was interviewed for the article and told the author that Google probably never tries to determine the sentiment of a particular business – nor would you want it to, for a variety of reasons.

However, Sullivan added that doesn’t mean Google, Bing or any search engine can’t tell whether a business has a favorable or unfavorable reputation. Shopping searches on Google will often rank a vendor with more sophisticated methods, including the number of reviews written about the company. Of course, most people don’t hit “shopping” when they shop through Google; they merely perform a standard search, where reviews are not a ranking factor.

So is nasty behavior going to become a trend? Sullivan says probably not. First of all, it’s still bad SEO strategy. Pissing people off is hardly a proven way to stay in business, whether you’re online or a brick-and-mortar store. Second, as the article points out, being bad is time-consuming. (Borker spends most of his day on the phone arguing with people.)  Third, Sullivan says Borker may just be a fluke. Most of the sites containing complaints about DecorMyEyes.com appear to put “nofollow” on their URLs, which shoots holes in  his link juice theory.

For the time being, reputation management does not appear to be in jeopardy. And neither, hopefully, is good customer service.
